Alpine County Airport

Alpine County Airport is located in the Eastern Sierras about 4 miles from the small town of Markleeville, CA. It has the advantages of being a car-friendly place to set up telescopes and it has VERY dark skies!

The airport itself consists of a simple airstrip with and apron for small planes to park. We set up our telescopes at the south end of the apron. The airport has no buildings, no lights, and is very rarely used.

Directions

Alpine County Airport is located on Airport Road which is accessible from Highway 89. From Highway 88, turn south onto Highway 89 towards Markleevile. (Or if you are coming from Ebbetts Pass or Monitor Pass, continue north on Highway 89 to about two miles past Markleevile.)

Airport Road is about halfway between Highway 88 and Markleeville, roughly abut 3 miles south of Highway 88 or 2 miles north of Markleeville.

Turn east onto Airport Road and follow it about 2 miles to the airport. (Airport Road goes uphill and is winding.)

The airport turn-off will be on the right side (east) of Airport Road.
